Last week, Max wrote about his mother's May birthday, and looking at my calendar, I realized this will be a busy month for celebrations. We have two friends celebrating on Saturday, my brother Stephen's on Monday, my wife’s 40th coming up… to name just a few. Then there’s the never-ending series of birthday parties for all our daughters’ classmates. It’s hard to keep up. I had to endure an afternoon at the claustraphobic kiddie casino that is Chuck E. Cheese last week, and have yet another birthday with my older daughter's 1st grade buddies on Saturday.

When I was around her age, or rather in second grade to be exact, a boy named Luke invited me to his birthday party. He was a quiet, undersized, and unusual kid who had just joined the school that year. When I got to his house, no one else had arrived yet. And after an hour we realized that none of the other second graders were ever showing up and I felt pretty bad for him.  But after some of the awkwardness subsided, we ended up doing pretty much the same things we would’ve done with others – playing video games, exploring the neighborhood, consuming unhealthy amounts of soda and cake. It ended up being a pretty good day. We never became best friends, but we’d hang out now and again through our elementary school years, occasional sleepovers and whatnot. Decades later we ran into each other when I was living in New York. I ended up joining him and his friends for a drink, and one of them asked about our school days and how we became friends. Luke started telling the same sad story, but then paused and smiled - and confessed he had never actually passed out any of the other invitations way back when. We had a good laugh about that.
